Not All Commercial Tire Service Gauges Are the Same
A commercial tire service gauge is a device which measures the air pressure in a pneumatic wheel or tire. It reads in PSI, or Pounds per Square Inch. Auto tires come with recommended PSI levels which can be found on the actual tire, in addition to being on the interior driver’s side door panel. Once a tire gauge has been read, the PSI number will then be compared to the tire manufacturers’ PSI, after which the air can be added until that proper pressure is achieved.
Underinflated tires will result in poor fuel efficiency, plus, increased chances of the tire failing. However, overinflated tires can result in dangerous blowouts and loss of handling. A commercial tire gauge is available in various different forms. One of the most popular ones looks very similar to a ballpoint pen. On one end is a rounded tip that has a small opening and a post in the middle. This fits over the inflation valve, as the user presses the tire gauge over the valve, air will escape from the tire, but, this will affect the reading much, however, a good airtight seal is crucial.
On the other end is a square opening that has a plastic tube. On the side of this are calibration marks, which will show the current air pressure. The air escaping forces the plastic tube to come out of the housing at a certain rate. Once this had ceased, users will be able to read the calibration mark in order to determine the tire’s PSI level.
Should the gauge read 25 PSI and the actual pressure should be 35 PSI, then you will need to add the extra 10 pounds of air. An air compressor that has the tire valve fitting will add additional pounds until the gauge reaches 35 PSI. Overinflated tires only need the tire’s valve to be depressed to let the extra air out.
